And finally, I'm here in Seattle, one of the epicenters of this pandemic here in the US. I'm doing okay, staying home, using the opportunity to stream more and get lots of drawing done, but I just wanted to make sure you guys are okay and ask how you're doing. How are you holding up? Let me know!
Firstly, thank you to everyone who has dropped by my Twitch stream while I play Dead Space! (here! https://www.twitch.tv/tallygames ) We'll be streaming again tomorrow, the 24th, at 12:00 US Pacific time!
I went in completely blind to this classic game, not knowing what to expect, but definitely having some assumptions. And I am LOVING it. It surprised me in a few ways. And well…here are five things I never knew about Dead Space:
Dude is stomping steel crates open, stomping the legs CLEAR OFF corpses. I know these are just game mechanics translating into character for me, but I choose to believe Isaac did not skip leg day. (And yes, I’ve got it bad—BAD—for him.)
I knew there were space zombies. I knew that much. And with any zombies, there comes the reality that you are killing people when you kill these zombies, and that doesn’t really get to me anymore. What IS getting to me, is that Isaac has NO WAY of knowing if Nicole is one of them. Has he killed her already? How would he even TELL? Some of the necromorphs are mutated beyond recognition and THAT? Imagining Isaac realizing that, questioning himself about every necromorph he’s taken down, wracking his brain to ask if any of them looked like her?? That hit me hard.
I was expecting a tale of human hubris, sure, but the accidental type. Y’know, where our curiosity and drive takes us into dangerous waters and we unwitting unleash something monstrous. And I’m still very early in the game, but I HAVE gotten hints that this? All this horror? Intentionally unleashed. Something religious-based it seems? VERY interesting. I can’t wait for more on this development.
This game knows its style. The necromorphs for one, which remind me pleasantly of Carpenter’s The Thing. Pleasantly, because the inspiration is there, but they haven’t just aped the idea. The design elements of the mutations call to mind that film, one of my favorite movies of all time. And the environment design! Industrial, not unlike, say Alien, but again not ripping off the design from that movie. Dead Space has this delightfully blocky, rusty, ponderous environment design that makes it feel lived in and functional.
Did NOT expect to get so drawn in to the lore and worldbuilding of this game! They lay it out rather expertly for you, providing you exactly what you need to know when you need to know it to create the optimal horror roller coaster ride. The necromorphs, the Marker, the shadowy specter of a religious sect guiding things unbeknownst to anyone…I MUST know more.
I can't wait to play more tomorrow. :D
